I “wake up” with a gasp, like I’ve fallen asleep in an ice bucket. I’m back in my own true body, and opening my eyes to the stark interior of the mining ship. My central nervous system is crying bloody murder, doing an urgent systems check as my lungs, heart, limbs, all go into a flap.

I make to rub my eyes, but my hands meet resistance. They’re tied together. My ankles are tied too. Shackled, in fact. There’s even a cable going from my feet to my wrists. I’m trussed up like a floating turkey.

“Carla? What the hell’s going on here?”

My body is slowly rotating, and as I’m turned, I see Carla and Tessa opposite me. Carla’s reeling in the cables she’s removed from our heads, while Tessa’s staring at me with a piercing, fully-alert gaze, and a cold, bitter smile.

“Finally, Mr. Remini. Finally, I’ve got you.”
